Austin Westjohn

Austin Westjohn joined The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in 2018, and is in his second season as the principal trombonist of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. 

Austin has performed with many orchestras, including the Nashville Symphony, Little Rock Wind Symphony, Reading Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, York Symphony, and Waco Symphony. He has previously been an orchestral fellow for the Hot Springs Music Festival and Miami Summer Music Festival.

As a soloist, Austin has been recognized on both national and international solo competition platforms. He was named the grand-prize winner of the Stella Boyle Smith Young Artist Competition sponsored by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and successively performed David’s “Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra” with the group as a featured soloist (2013). He was also named the winner of the Texas State Trombone Symposium Solo Competition (2017). Selected as a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Solo Competitions for three consecutive years straight, he competed at the International Trombone Festival in New York City (2016) and in southern California (2017). 

Currently with The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, D.C., Austin has played for the National Tree Lighting, the state funeral service for former President H.W. Bush, in the PBS Broadcast of “A Capitol Fourth,” with The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets at the White House Truman Balcony, and in hundreds of national ceremonies including full-honors funerals held in Arlington National Cemetery. Versatile across many genres, he has performed with The U.S. Army Blues on a number of occasions. He is also presently active with the American Trombone Workshop, and serves as the coordinator for the National Trombone Quartet Competition. 

Austin received his master’s degree in trombone performance from Baylor University and graduated with a bachelor of music education degree from Harding University.
