synthesize the individual attention of private lessons with the community atmosphere of band
Why the new studio format?
Hi! I’m Katie Velasquez.
I’ve been performing and teaching the flute for over 20 years, much of which has been in the traditional 30-60 minute weekly lesson format.
In high school I was intense. I practiced until midnight. I woke up at 5:30 AM and was always the first one in the band hall. I made All-State twice. I competed in national competitions. I graduated at the top of my class with a rigorous AP schedule. I won my first full-time orchestra position at the age of 23. You could always find me with a flute in my hands. But… I traveled most of this journey alone.
I don’t want any of my students to feel alone in their journey of learning, whether they want to go pro, or play just for fun.
My solution was to create a hybrid learning program that combines regular private lessons with the group studio class format used in college music conservatories. With this new format, students receive individual attention from me and have a community of peers for support, motivation, and feedback.
The combination of focused 1:1 instruction and the support of a tightly-knit group of peers cultivates the perfect environment for personal and musical growth.
