Hi. I’m Matt Richards.
I’ve been performing and teaching percussion for over 20 years. If there is one core principle I would tell every prospective percussionist, playing percussion successfully is enormously difficult without serious commitment to practice.
Percussion is unique to other instruments. The equipment takes up a lot of room. Marimbas are huge. Snare drums are loud. Practicing at home can often be a challenge. You can’t simply pack up your marimba in bag in 5 minutes and go anywhere with it.
Percussionists are also the masters of many skills. They are the jack-of-all trades of the band hall. They can play dozens if not hundreds of instruments.
Percussion is different, and percussionists need to have their own community. They need a community to challenge and support them, especially with the balance of practicing both marimba and snare drum concurrently.
Most students become more proficient at snare drum or marimba, but a well-rounded percussionist can play all percussion instruments at a high level. That’s why I created the BDSG online percussion studio. The studio is a community where the students can learn and feed off the energy of their peers, all under my careful guidance.

Limit: 8 students in the advanced studio, 8 students in the beginner studio
